Building Traffic To Your Blog
I have recently been working on trying to get more traffic to my blog, and by all means if you know any good tricks I invite you to comment on this post. I have learned a few things that I will discuss here.
I will start by saying how important I think having a good blog can be for you. Not only can you use it to show case some of your work, but you can use it as a portfolio piece. Also if you can build a lot of traffic, that many more potential employers and other contacts will know who you are. That involves people all over your country as well as others.
That brings me to the point of this post. How do you gain traffic to your blog or forum? I have learned a lot on this subject in the past couple of weeks, and I will go over just a couple of tricks that I know.
The first thing I did was to download a plug-in called all in one SEO. This is a wordpress plug-in for those of you who do not know. It allows you to easily customize your title, description, and keywords, which are a vital part of, search engine optimization. If you are not working in wordpress this is a fairly simple code that you can add in yourself. You can go off of the page source of this post if you would like to see an example.
This is what the code looks like:
<meta name=”description” content=”How to build traffic to your blog or forum.” />
<meta name=”keywords” content=”building traffic, blog, forum, graphic design blog, how to build traffic to your blog, traffic, advertising, graphic designer blog” />
Other things you can do to show up better in searches are to write consistently and precisely about your topic. Search engines will count the amount of times words show up in your website and will rank it based on that to certain degree. If the words that you used are <h1> (or header tags) search engines will consider that information more important.
That is just scratching the surface of SEO, but after you do that you can start your social networking. This involves everything you can think of to get your site seen by people. I personally use twitter, facebook, other blogs, and forums to try to get people to my site. Many blogs and forums will allow you to add your site to any comment you leave.
I do not want to forget about the most important thing. You have to provide information, materials or a service that people are attracted to and will keep them coming back. Maybe people will even refer others to your site. Your content is the most important thing. If you do not have valuable content you cannot expect people to come to your site.
Please comment if you think I have left anything out. I am sure that there are others out there that can at least add to what I have written here. Thanks for reading as always!

Good post, Mike! I am currently in a redesign for my website and I am wanting to incorporate a blog. You’ve listed some helpful tips. Another thing I’ve found to increase traffic to your website or blog, is to comment/participate on other people’s blogs. That way, it shows that you have something intelligent to say and will get more people interested in your blog.

I really love what you blog about here, very refreshing and smart. One issue though, I’m running Firefox on Ubuntu and parts of your site structure are a little off. I realize it’s not a popular setup, but it’s still something to watch out for. Just tossing you a heads up.
